The City of Stillwater, MSCWMO and local volunteers have worked for years to improve the quality of the lake and reduce stormwater runoff from surrounding areas. They’ve done a variety of projects, including stabilizing eroding gullies, redesigning the city-owned boat launch with porous pavers and native plants, installing raingardens in neighborhoods, retrofitting stormwater ponds in commercial areas, and engaging community residents to adopt storm drains through the Adopt-a-Drain program.

The final project being constructed to help clean up Lily Lake is a regional infiltration basin that will collect stormwater from the area, soak it into the ground, and deliver it to the lake cleaner and with less phosphorus. This will help keep the lake healthy and prevent harmful algal growth.

Safety

One of the most fun things to do in Stillwater is soaking up some sun on Lily Lake. In the olden days, you could count on a long line of locals and visitors to show up for a dip or to enjoy the scenic views of this tranquil lakefront locale.

However, as road builders began building new roads, businesses and homes on the west side of town, the resulting stormwater runoff became a significant contributor to the poor water quality of our quaint little lake. As such, the city, MSCWMO, and community volunteers have been putting their heads together to come up with an array of lake-related projects to reduce the amount of stormwater that makes it into the lake.

The best part about the whole endeavor is that it will likely be a successful and long-lasting project. Using state-of-the-art technology and smart planning, the aforementioned raingarden is expected to produce more than 200 gallons of clean water per year for the benefit of Lily Lake.
