History

Stillwater is known as the Birthplace of Minnesota and is one of America’s most picturesque towns. From paddlewheel riverboats to centuries-old brick facades and charming Victorian mansions, this historic city is brimming with things to do.

While in Stillwater, make sure to visit Pioneer Park St N. This small park features a large playground, two large picnic shelters (available to rent from the City of Stillwater for exclusive access), and great vistas overlooking the St. Croix River.

It is also home to a museum that showcases the area’s pioneer heritage. Since 1972, countless members, volunteers, patrons, and visitors have worked to help the park preserve and educate people about Central Minnesota’s history.

Stillwater is a popular destination for those who want to spend time outdoors. It is home to numerous state and county parks that offer hiking, biking, and fishing opportunities.

This city has also done a good job of preserving its historic buildings and landmarks. In addition to its renowned courthouse and unique lift bridge, there are many beautiful Victorian homes of lumber barons and merchants that have been restored to their former glory.

Parking

Stillwater is home to many public parks and plenty of street parking. You’ll find a convenient parking option on the Pedestrian Plaza, but you can also park at Teddy Bear Park and Pioneer Park.

A great way to start a visit to Stillwater is with a historic Trolley Tour. They run through the summer and fall and take you around downtown.

This is a must-do for anyone with kids, and it’s also a great date idea. The trolley starts at the VALLEY BOOKSELLER and shuttles families to PIONEER PARK for storytime, before returning them to CANDYLAND for a free snack.

Downtown Stillwater was built on a series of hills that overlook the St. Croix River and surrounding valley. Five sets of historic steps were installed into the hills to make it easier for people to get to the business district below. Each set provides a unique vantage point.

Dogs allowed

If you’re planning to bring your pet along on your trip to Stillwater, there are a number of hotels that offer dog-friendly rooms. Many of these hotels also work with local animal shelters to help find new homes for pets.

One of the best ways to explore the area with your four-legged friend is by taking a walk on the scenic trails. There are paved trails that run through downtown and through parks like Lowell Park.

Another option is to take the sweet red Storytime Trolley that runs on Saturdays in the summer & fall. This is a very kid-friendly, hour-long tour that includes a visit to PIONEER PARK for a storytime session before making a quick loop around town.
